Bold color was my introduction into the world of painting, with colorists as disparate as Matisse and Leroy Nieman the first to influence my artwork. What pulls me into the studio is the urge to work with lots of expressive color and explore faces and figures and anything vaguely anthropomorphic. People and faces have always fascinated me – the arch of an eye, the line of the nose, the curve of a cheek. Half-caught impressions of a profile or the way someone holds their head also provide inklings about who people are — about who we are. At this time, I work mostly in watercolor and gouache, and sometimes in monotype or mixed media. Switching between watercolors and monotypes can be very helpful in thinking through new ways to approach both media. The experimental nature of monotype is very satisfying; to see what comes off the press has the same kind of excitement and tension as opening a kiln of fired pots — one is never quite sure of the outcome.
